Scholars will explore the 7 principles of art while learning techniques in a variety of art media. Each lesson is infused with OURstory, culture and geography.
Topic: Principles of Design through the African Lens
Key Topics Covered:
- Balance – Islamic Geometric Design – North Africa
- Contrast – Haitian Silhouette Sculptures – Haiti
- Emphasis – Painting and Drawing Techniques – Across Africa and the Diaspora
- Movement – Abstract Figure Drawings – The Caribbean
- Pattern – Bogolanfini (Mud Cloth) – Mali
- Rhythm – Visual Art and Music Fusion – Across Africa and the Diaspora
- Unity – Tapa Cloths of Fiji – (African people, since prehistoric times have traveled the globe, we will use this class to acknowledge this fact and honour our traveling ancestors)
Learning Outcomes:
Scholars will gain knowledge on indigenous art practices developed by melanated people from across the globe. This course will foster a strong sense of pride and confidence in our personal style of creating.
